Basti

Basti kriya is a yogic technique to clean the colon by sucking water through anus. In hatyogpradipika there are 2 types of basti Jalbasti and Pavan basti.

Jalbasti

Before the practice of jalbasti, one should be master in Uddiyana Bandha , Nauli.

Method

  • Fill a bathtub with water, now sit in squatting position in water.
  • Insert one end of the rubber catheter about 2 inches into the anas, other end of the catheter should be in water.
  • Perform uddiyana bandha and contract the anal sphincter muscles to suck water in from the anus to the rectum and to the sigmoid colon.
  • Once the water is inside, gently remove rubber catheter.
  • The now get up and perform nauli, to washes the colon.
  • After nauli go to toilet and the cleansed waste.
  • After regular practice one can suck water without catheter.

Benefits of Jalbasti

  • It improves digestive system, help to relive from several gastro-intestinal complaints such as excessive gas, hyper-acidity, indigestion.
  • It stimulates the immune system and detoxification of body.
  • It helps to relive from skin problem, insomnia, arthritis, heart problem, lack of sexual interest, depression, insomnia.
  • It makes mind more positive and also increase enthusiasm.

Note –

  • Jalbasti should be done at early morning and empty stomach only.
  • Beginner should do practice with proper practice.
  • After procedure relax body and take light and easily digestible food.

Pavan Basti

It is also called as Sthala Basti or air basti.

Method

  • Sit in Utkatasana
  • Insert the catheter or pipe into the colon and perform Uddiyama Bandha.
  • After this, start sucking the air into colon, air will move in colon and finally come out as flatulence.
  • Perform this practice three to five times.
  • Now remove rubber catheter out of the body.
  • After regular practice, one can perform it without the rubber catheter.
