Bhastrika Pranayama

The Bellow’s Breath or Breath of Fire

The Sanskrit word bhastrika means bellows (धौंकनी). Bellows is a device use for blowing air into a fire. Bhastrika pranayama involves both rapid inhalation and exhalation which is coordinated by the action of the diaphragm and abdominal muscles so the air moves in and out of through lungs quickly.

There are two different techniques for Bhastrika Pranayama

  • According to Hatha yoga Pradipika
  • Modern, changed version technique.

According to Hatha Yoga Pradipika

  • Sit comfortably in meditation pose (Padmasana, Siddhasana or Swastikasana) with erect spine.
  • Keep both palms on knees in dhyan mudra. Concentrate on normal breathing.
  • Relax and calm the mind
  • Take a deep breath through both nostrils and fill the lungs completely with air and then exhale forcefully with hissing sound through nose. Inhale deeply and exhale completely.
  • Do this for 2 min and increase time gradually.

Modern, changed Version Technique

For beginner to maintain coordination between diaphragm and abdominal muscles modern version is useful.

  • Sit comfortably in meditation pose (vajrasana, Padmasana, Siddhasana or Swastikasana) with erect spine. (best position is vajrasana).
  • Concentrate on normal breathing.
  • Make a feast of both arms and place them in front of chest. Raise chin and close eyes.
  • With complete inhalation, open feast and raise arms overhead forcefully.
  • Now exhale forcefully with hissing sound through nose, bring arms back in front of shoulder.
  • Inhale deeply and exhale completely.
  • Do this for 2 min and increase time gradually.
  • It helps to increase blood and oxygen supply to lungs and heart, help to resolve heart and lung disorder.
  • It helps to regulate cholesterol level and lowers the risk of heart attacks.
  • It is helpful in chronic cold, cough, throat infection, Asthma and other respiratory problem.
  • It is helpful in indigestion, liver problems, obesity, hypertension, headache, migraine, neurological problems, gastric problems and arthritis.
  • It helps to improves blood circulation, respiration, digestion and nervous system. Thus, improves immune system also.
  • It helps to prevent thyroid problems.
  • It helps to increase concentration power.
  • It calms mind, decrease stress, insomnia and mental tension.
  • It helps to awake kundalini Shakti.
