Kapalbhati (Skull Shining Breathing Technique)

  • Kapalbhati is breathing technique which involves “Active exhalation and Passive inhalation”.
  • In hatyog pradipika it is given as “Shatkarma” shuddhikriyas as a process of cleaning the wind pipe.
  • The word kapalbhati is made up of two words, kapal meaning skull and bhati means shining, illuminating.
  • Sit comfortably in meditation pose (Padmasana, Siddhasana or Swastikasana) with erect spine. Concentrate on normal breathing.
  • Place both palms on knees in dhyan mudra.
  • Take a deep breath in.
  • With pulling navel in back towards the spine, exhale quickly and suddenly, making a puffing sound.
  • Always Focus on exhaling forcefully and not on the inhalation.
  • After complete exhalation, inhale deeply, with inhalation abdomen will get rise.
  • Continue for 10 – 12 breaths and then take a break and then repeat same process.
  • Slowly performer can increase kapalbhati till 30min.
  • It helps to increase blood and oxygen supply to lungs and heart, help to resolve heart and lung disorder.
  • It helps to regulate cholesterol level and lowers the risk of heart attacks.
  • It is helpful in chronic cold, cough, Asthma, and other respiratory problem.
  • It is helpful in diabetes, indigestion, liver problems.
  • It helps to stimulate abdominal organs, improves circulation, digestion.
  • It helps to increase basal metabolic rate, and reduce the obesity.
  • Energizes the nervous system and rejuvenates brain cells.
  • It also increases blood supply to various parts of the body and help for detoxification of body.
  • It activates the body and removes lethargy.
