Mudra

  • The sanskrit word mudra means “posture”. Yoga mudra is hand posture used with pranayama.
  • Each area of the hand has a reflex reaction to the specific part of the brain. So, mudra redirect the energy flow and reflexes of the brain. Thus, stimulate different parts of the body.
  • The study of naturopathy said that our body is made of panchatatva, agni(fire), akash(sky), prithvi(earth), jal (water) and vayu (gas) and if anyone these five becomes much or less, diseases arise.
  • Five fingers of our hand express these five substances as following.

Thumb – Agni tatva

Tarjani- Vayu tatva

Madhyama – Akash tatva

Anamika – Pruthvi tatva

Kanistha – Jal tatva

Thus, specific mudra exercises balance the panchatatva elements, thereby heal illnesses and diseases caused by imbalances of panchatatva elements.

Instruction

  • Mudra will be more effective if done with pranayama.
  • Mudra should be done between 15 to 30 mins.
  • Form mudra with both hands, at the same time. It will be more effective than doing a mudra with just one hand.

Jnana/ Gyan mudra

Method

  • Connect the thumb and index finger tip together (connecting fire and air) forming a circle.
  • Keep the remaining three fingers stretched out, relax, straight and joined.
  • Palms should face upward.

  • It stimulates endocrine glands and balance secretion.

Vayu Mudra

  • Then roll thumb facing upwards and hold for 3-4 min.
  • Focus on breath.
