Ujjayi Pranayama (Conqueror Breath)

Ujjayi means victorious. Ujjayi pranayama is victorious breathing technique. Because of the sound, it makes when performed. it is also called as “Ocean Breath” or “Hissing Breath”.

  • Sit comfortably in meditation pose (Padmasana, Siddhasana or Swastikasana) with erect spine. Concentrate on normal breathing.
  • Place both palms on knees in dhyan mudra.
  • Now slowly try to direct the breath from back of throat and Feel the air of inhalations passing through windpipe. For that slightly contract the back of throat. And Softly whisper the sound, “ahhh,” as inhale and exhale.
  • Inhalations should fill lungs to their fullest expansion and exhalation should Completely release the air.
  • After inhalation hold the breath as per capacity and perform mula and Jalandhar bandha, if comfortable.
  • Concentrate on the breathing sound and relax the mind.
  • Start from five minutes and gradually increase time to 15 minutes.
  • It helps to increase blood and oxygen supply to lungs and heart and help to resolve heart and lung disorder.
  • It helps to regulate cholesterol level and lowers the risk of heart attacks.
  • It is helpful in chronic cold, cough, Asthma and other respiratory problem.
  • It is helpful in indigestion and liver problems also.
  • It helps to prevent thyroid problems.
  • It makes voice sweet and melodious, so very much helpful for singers.
  • It helps to increase concentration power.
  • It calms mind, decrease stress, insomnia and mental tension.
  • It helps to awake kundalini Shakti.
